Fitbit female health tracking goes live as healthcare apps start rolling out

Fitbit has issued an update for its Ionic and Versa smartwatches, which introduces a host of new features.

The "female health tracking" tool, available through the Fitbit app on the compatible smartwatches, will roll out this month.

The period-tracking data will sit in the Fitbit app alongside all your other data-like activity, sleep, and weight-so you can figure out the likely cause for your burning desire to punch loud eaters and/or eat an entire bag of potato chips. These apps and clock faces should provide Fitbit smartwatch users new options to improve wellness and help manage conditions, such as diabetes and some types of cancer, Fitbit says in an official statement. Fitbit confirmed today that it has added female health tracking and quick replies for Ionic and Versa owners. Fitbit will predict your upcoming cycles using its "proprietary cycle algorithm that gets smarter and more accurate as they log their period". Dexcom's app will be available in the second half of the year, while the rest of the app and clock faces that aren't available today should go live by summer 2018.

If you have Fitbit's Versa or Ionic smartwatch, you'll now be able to respond to texts from your phone or other messaging services like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

And what would a Fitbit wearable be without fitness tracking?

You'll be able to quickly answer incoming texts by choosing one of Fitbit's five pre-programmed responses or certain emojis. In the future, Fitbit hopes to use all this menstrual data to offer insights about how sleep and exercise impact your period and vice versa. There's also an indicator for the predicted ovulation date. Fitbit intends for this to help budding developers improve the visibility of their apps, essentially making available its entire Versa and Ionic user community located across the world. There, you can see where you are in your cycle, when your next period is expected and check your estimated fertile windows.

To unleash the new features, users must first update to the latest version of the app from their phone. These are available in the Fitbit App Gallery right now, with some of the highlights being Walgreens, One Drop, Diplomat Pharmacy Inc., and Fitabase.
