Trump Says He'll Pardon Dinesh D'Souza

President Donald Trump has announced on Twitter that he will fully pardon conservative writer Dinesh D'Souza on Thursday.

D'Souza is a major Trump supporter and has created a number of right-wing propaganda films that help generate conservative conspiracy theories. The two spoke for almost three minutes, according to the President.

Trump said he only knew D'Souza from TV and reading his works.

D'Souza became one of the most prominent critics of the Obama administration after his 2012 documentary, "2016: Obama's America", became the second highest grossing US documentary ever.

"I want to thank @realDonaldTrump for giving my husband a pardon but I particularly want to thank @SenTedCruz for putting it on his radar and helping make it happen!"

"Mr. D'Souza accepted responsibility for his actions, and also completed community service by teaching English to citizens and immigrants seeking citizenship". D'Souza said as much as recently as 2017.

One day after meeting with Kim Kardashian West to discuss prison reform, Donald Trump on Thursday used his presidential pardon powers to right a perceived wrong in the US criminal justice system. He added that "plenty of other politicians could have said a lot worse". One Breitbart News story from 2015 compared his sentencing - he spent eight months in a halfway house and was required to attend counseling in lieu of jail - to Maoism.

D'Souza was indicted in 2014 for violations of campaign finance laws. "Please accept this letter as my effort to correct the record Dinesh created by his false and misleading submissions to the Court regarding me, the extent and nature of his criminal conduct, and my relationship with our daughter, Danielle D'Souza".

He has previously launched campaigns against both Obama and the then-presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. He had been sharply critical of Obama, whose administration prosecuted him. He also once argued that Adolf Hitler was not "anti-gay".

Last August, Trump pardoned Arpaio less than a month after his conviction for criminal contempt in a case involving racial profiling of Hispanics.

Traditionally, pardon petitions are vetted by the pardon attorney before they land on the president's desk.
