Sensing the danger and worst outcome, villagers looked around the spot to find a seven-metre (23 foot) long giant python with a bloated belly.

Police chief Hamka said that the villagers found the giant python lying about 30 metres from Ms Tiba's sandals and machete, adding that she was swallowed head first and her body was found intact.

Police chief Agung Ramos said: "People took the snake into the village and started splitting the snake".

Indonesian villagers claimed to have captured the 447 kilograms (985 pounds) python.

Reticulated pythons are common throughout Indonesia and other areas of Southeast Asia but they rarely kill humans.

While they have been known to attack small animals, attempts to eat people are rare. According to media reports, the victim was identified as Akbar, a 25-year-old man who had gone missing from Salubiro village and was found after villagers found a misshapen python.
