Trump, faced with a public outcry over his policy that separated children from their migrant parents at the US border with Mexico, had urged Congress to take up immigration legislation to permanently prevent family separations.

The delegation visited a Customs and Border Protection processing facility in the U.S. -Mexico border city of McAllen, the epicenter of the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy in which people entering the U.S. illegally face being prosecuted. The woman is being held in Washington state and has decided she doesn't want to pursue asylum so that she can be deported and reunited with her daughter, he said.

"Once the pictures of the families came to the fore, that is the issue", Continetti said.

Trump suggested on Friday that some of the wrenching tales that have emerged from the borderwere fabricated by Democrats.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the more moderate Republican bill is "a compromise with the devil".

US President Donald Trump on Friday asked Republicans to "stop wasting their time" on immigration after the much-debated immigration bill failed to receive votes from the Democrats in the Senate. He has falsely blamed Democrats for forcing them to enforce the policy.

Just when House Republicans needed Donald Trump's backing the most - on their big immigration overhaul - he dashed off a presidential tweet saying they should quit wasting their time on it. "Dems are just playing games, have no intention of doing anything to solves this decades old problem". Trump continued. "Immigration must be based on merit - we need people who will help to Make America Great Again!"

All 435 House seats and a third of the 100-member Senate will be up for grabs in November.

They also follow on days of congressional wrangling as GOP leadership had been hoping Trump could help sell immigration legislation to wary members. Mr. Will claimed the "most telegenic example" of a need to oust Republicans exists with the administration's "zero tolerance" policy regarding illegal immigrants along the US southern border.

Also, Trump is taking a risk by asking Republicans to push off a vote until after the election. But without Trump's backing, the bill is essentially guaranteed to fail.

His proposal drew immediate criticism from legal analysts and immigrant rights advocates who said it would violate the U.S. Constitution's due process provision, which applies to citizens and non-citizens alike.

He dismissed "phony stories of sadness and grief" while asserting the real victims of the nation's immigration crisis are Americans killed by those who cross the border unlawfully. "But now the problem is for the Democrats because separating families may be unpopular; zero tolerance, however, is relatively popular", Trump said.

While noting that most Border Patrol workers at the facility were trying to do the best they can, Himes said the Congressional delegation was there to see that the children receive "the values and ethic good treatment that we are here to demand". Doing so has been derisively called granting "amnesty" to those who entered the country illegally.

"I think it's important that the House be able to show we can take the action", McCarthy, R-Calif said. That would be a sharp increase from the 2,500 beds available for families in the last fiscal year.

Some reunifications were taking place, though it was unclear whether they involved the 700 children taken from parents between October and April, or the 2,300 since the mandatory prosecution of illegal border-crossers, whose children were taken away as a result, began in early May.
