It is the first time Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been allowed out of prison since her arrest, in April 2016, and conviction past year for plotting to overthrow the Iranian regime - something she has always denied.

She has been accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government and being involved in a planned coup - an allegation she has always strenuously denied.

She was released from Evin prison in Tehran on Thursday morning and is with her family and daughter in Damavand until Sunday, according to the Free Nazanin campaign.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe's husband, Richard Ratcliffe has been campaigning for her release since she was first imprisoned.

The ritual coincides with Eid al-Adha, which is one of the most significant festivals on the Muslim calendar. Centuries later, Muslims have carried the tradition of sacrificing animals in the name of God.

British-Iranian national Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been granted weekend furlough from Iran's notorious Evin prison, where she's been detained since September of 2016.

"This was a very happy surprise after a number of false dawns recently, which had been increasingly unsettling".

"She (Nazanin) was very happy on the phone, though confessed to having cried lots, particularly when seeing her grandmother, and to being still overwhelmed", said Mr Ratcliffe, who also gave thanks to Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe was warned not to attempt to leave the country while on temporary release, or conduct interviews with local or global media, it added.

Hunt, who met Ratcliffe in London earlier this month after he was appointed as Britain's top diplomat in July, called her temporary release "really good news" and paid tribute to the "tireless campaigning by husband Richard and her friends". She and her family deny the charges, saying she was on holiday with her daughter, visiting family in Tehran. "She should be freed once and for all and allowed to travel back to the United Kingdom with her young daughter Gabriella".

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on Thursday the temporary release was "extremely positive" and called on Iranian authorities to allow her to return to her family in the UK.

"I didn't tell Gabriella or for a long time my mum - so if it didn't happen I would be the only one to suffer".

Zaghari-Ratcliffe's lawyers will ask the authorities on Saturday to extend her furlough, it added.
