McCain's body will be laid to rest on Sunday, and flags on all government buildings - including the one over the White House and the adjoining office building - will fly at half staff until then.

President Donald Trump ordered the flag flying above the White House re-lowered to half-mast on Monday as a sign of respect for Sen.

He also said that "at the request of the McCain family, I have also authorized military transportation of Senator McCain's remains from Arizona to Washington, D.C., military pallbearers and band support, and a horse and caisson transport during the service at the United States Naval Academy".

Trump said Vice President Mike Pence will address a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on Friday.

Mr Trump has refused to publish a letter drafted by White House staff on the death of Mr McCain.

Over the weekend, the Washington Post reported that Trump stopped his staff from issuing a formal statement praising McCain as an American hero. Trump had previously merely issued condolences to McCain's family via Twitter. Asked at four separate occasions through the day to share his thoughts on McCain's legacy and passing, Trump did not take up any of the opportunities, each time acting as if he hadn't heard the question.

The statement was prepared and given to Mr Trump for his approval, but according to the paper, he told aides he preferred to tweet instead, and it was ultimately not released. Trump appeared to defend the rallygoers when he said there were "fine people on both sides". "Our hearts and prayers are going to the family of Senator John McCain. and we very much appreciate everything Senator McCain has done for our country". 'We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been'.

"There really is no room in the McCain family to focus on anything but him", Davis said. He had an entire career, an entire life, before Trump took office previous year.

McCain said Trump owed veterans an apology for that, but he continued to back the celebrity businessman as the Republican nominee.

"It's outrageous that the White House would mark American hero John McCain's death with a two-sentence tweet, making no mention of his heroic and inspiring life", said AMVETS National Executive Director Joe Chenelly. The Legion described McCain as a "cherished member". "I like people who weren't captured".

"Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here", McCain wrote.
