Missiles streak across the Damascus skyline as the US Britain and France launch an attack on Syria

Rebels from Idlib have blown up two key bridges in a bid to hamper an expected government assault on Syria's only remaining rebel-held province, a monitor said on Friday.

The drills come amid rising tensions between Russian Federation and the West over Syria's northern rebel-held region of Idlib.

United Nations investigators have already attributed several chemical attacks in Syria to government forces, including one attack using the nerve agent Sarin gas against the Idlib town of Khan Sheikhoun in April 2017.

"The negotiations between Turkey and HTS are still under way", said the head of the Britain-based Syria Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman.

The US Department of State said the best way to protect the civilians in Idlib was for Russian Federation to compel the Assad regime to avoid a military offensive.

The UN and aid workers are bracing for disaster, warning that up to 800,000 people are in danger of renewed displacement if a government offensive gets underway.

The leaders of Russia, Iran, and Turkey are slated to meet next week in the northern Iranian city of Tabriz, where many are hoping for a deal to avert a calamitous battle over Idlib.

But with a regime offensive looming, the Turkish military has been reinforcing its 12 monitoring posts.

The drills come amid a regional buildup of warships that Russian news outlets have described as the largest of its kind since Moscow's forces entered the Syrian conflict in 2015.

"It is necessary to disassociate the so-called moderate opposition from terrorists and at the same time prepare an operation against them while minimising risks for the civilian population", Lavrov said. Any major military operation would send a new wave of refugees to Turkey's border.

The office of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday warned of the growing risk of a humanitarian catastrophe, and called for restraint.

UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura told reporters that there was a high concentration of foreign fighters in Idlib, including an estimated 10,000 terrorists, but it would be better to set up humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians than rush into a battle which could turn prove to be a "perfect storm".

One of the fears is that the regime will resort to using chemical weapons, as it did during an offensive against rebels in the Eastern Ghouta enclave earlier this year.

"It would be a tragic irony frankly if at nearly the end of. a territorial war inside Syria, we would be witnessing the most horrific tragedy to the largest number of civilians", he said.
