Melania moved to the United States in 1996 to pursue her modelling career and became a U.S. citizen in 2006 after she married Donald Trump in 2005.

Melania said she was looking forward to visiting "four handsome and very different countries" in Africa prior to her visit.

It is her first worldwide trip without her husband Donald Trump who has yet to visit the continent nearly two years into his mandate.

On Wednesday, she will embark on a visit to Cape Coast Castle after an initial courtesy call on the chiefs and elders of the region at the Cape Coast Palace.
