"We are working every day to ensure all infection control protocols are continuously followed and closely monitoring the situation at the facility", Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said in a statement.

Those affected range in age from toddlers to young adults, with the vast majority under the age of 18.

The department said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were helping with lab tests and expertise.

The child, already fragile and suffering respiratory illness, was not confirmed to have a common infection, health officials said. "The strain has been particularly associated with disease in communal living arrangements and can be more severe". The most recent outbreak of the illness at the facility, about 32 miles (50 km) northwest of New York City, was October 22.

The department is continuing to investigate the outbreak.

In a review by the government's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Wanaque was awarded an above-average ranking in overall quality but was given a below-average health inspection rating.
