BREAKING: Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns at President Trump’s request

In an undated later, Sessions indicated Trump asked for the resignation.

"Most importantly as my time as attorney general, we have restored and upheld the rule of law", Mr Sessions added, while thanking the Republican president.

In a letter, Sessions announced his plan to resign pressure from Trump, with the document beginning with, "At your request, I am submitting my resignation".

He also said Mr Sessions' replacement might reduce Mr Mueller's budget "so low that his investigation grinds nearly to a halt". "The acting attorney general is in charge of all matters under the purview of the Department of Justice", said department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores. Trump, who reportedly referred to Sessions as "Mr. Magoo", did not like the fact that Sessions recused himself from Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe after consulting with DOJ ethics officials.

The departure of Mr Sessions, who was the first U.S. senator to back Mr Trump's presidential run in 2016, was long expected, and came one day after Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives but boosted their Senate majority.
