Samsung patent hints at another foldable smartphone design

Samsung announced its first Android Go device, the Galaxy J2 Core, back in August, and it's already back with a sequel. The next steps are rollable TVs and foldable handheld screens. Several windows can be arranged and used on the large screen.

Samsung invited developers to start making apps for the new device, and minutes before the company showed its foldable smartphone, Google made official it would support a new category of Android devices and call it "foldables". "The experience was reengineered to reduce clutter and distractions, allowing the user to better focus and quickly navigate".

Google's head of Android UX, Mr Glen Murphy, who was on stage with Samsung, said Google would work with developers to bring more features to the phone.

It's not clear what phone this is, and you can't see it in much detail, but we're not aware of any existing Samsung handset that comes in that exact selection of shades, so it could be an early look at the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10. A new foundation?Why would we want our displays to fold?

Samsung is among a few developers working on foldable phones.

But they were unexpectedly beaten by a Chinese display start-up, Royole, last week.

Royole showed off its FlexPai phone to journalists on Monday, with Samsung following suit with a foldable Galaxy X smartphone on Wednesday. These are first generation devices but imagine some years from now where physical ports have been removed, driving electronics significantly reduced in size, and batteries perhaps flexible, too.

As part of its efforts to scale up Bixby services, Samsung is expanding support to five new languages in the coming months, including British English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Some have even teased the images of these devices for whatever it is worth.
