Three US service members killed in Afghanistan blast

The three military members were killed on Tuesday in a roadside bombing near the city of Ghazni, the USA military said, in what appeared to be the deadliest attack on us forces in Afghanistan in the last 17 months.

NATO's Resolute Support mission would not immediately release any details about the identity of the soldiers, whose deaths took the number of American service personnel to die in the war-torn country this year to 12.

An American contractor was also wounded, it said, adding that the four injured in the blast were receiving medical care. Attack helicopters flew in to support the evacuation of the wounded.

It appeared to be the deadliest attack on American forces since June 2017, when an Afghan army soldier shot and killed three US soldiers in an insider attack in the Achin district of the eastern Nangarhar province.

The U.S. military announced the death of Army Ranger Sgt. Leandro Jasso, 25, on Saturday. While the Taliban is guilty of inflating casualties that it inflicts on Afghan and USA forces, the operations themselves often can be confirmed in the Afghan press.

In the past several weeks, the insurgents also have launched assaults on villages in rural districts of the province that are populated by minority ethnic Hazara Shiites.

The deaths bring to 13 the number of US troops killed in the country in 2018. The great majority of US forces withdrew by the end of 2014, but those still in the country often are involved in supporting combat situations on the ground as well as by air.
