'Lion Air jet that crashed killing 189 was not airworthy’

Parts of an engine of the Lion Air Flight JT610 recovered from the sea during search operations in the Java Sea on Nov 3. Flight recorder data showed that the plane's nose was forced down by an automated anti-stall system meant to protect the plane

Reports: Readings show Lion Air pilots struggled with Boeing 737 system before crash

"During (that) flight, the plane was experiencing a technical problem but the pilot made a decision to continue", Nurcahyo Utomo, aviation head at the National Transport Safety Committee, told reporters.

The angle-of-attack (AOA) sensors measure how well the plane's nose is positioned against the oncoming air.

The plane was intact with its engines running when it crashed, at more than 450 miles per hour (720 kph), into the Java Sea, Soerjanto Tjahjono, head of Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee, said at the time.

The APA, a U.S. airline pilots union, said that carriers and pilots had not been informed by Boeing of certain changes in the aircraft control system installed on the new MAX variants of the 737.

The jet's systems had detected it was in a stall due to a faulty indicator and gave the captain a warning through a "stick shaker" that vibrated the controls, he said.

"The problem is if multiple malfunctions occur all at once, which one should be prioritized?"

The company now faces lawsuits from victim's families, while Indonesian authorities will continue to work with USA agencies as part of an ongoing joint investigation.

In a statement following the release of the report, Boeing played up the possibility of pilot error, saying the aircraft the company manufactured was sound.

The findings suggest the airline put the plane back into service despite being aware of problems on earlier flights. After the previous flight was affected by a malfunction similar to what seems to have doomed JT610, the pilot ran a "non-normal checklist" on the runaway stabilizer.

The aircraft manufacturer noted that the investigators' report cited actions by the flight crew that led to the crash.

Recorder data showed that the plane's nose was forced down by an automated anti-stall system, meant to protect the plane against a perceived stall, over two dozen times.

"Boeing has said that the proper steps for pulling out of an incorrect activation of the system were already in flight manuals, so there was no need to detail this specific system in the new 737 jet".

Microsoft dethrones Apple as the most valuable USA company
Today, Microsoft became the most valuable company in the world, surpassing Apple for the first time in years. The famous Apple vs Microsoft has always been one of the heated arguments among fans or enthusiasts.

They repeatedly told air traffic control they had a flight control problem.

The preliminary report into a Lion Air plane that crashed, killing 189 people on board, has found the plane wasn't airworthy.

"I don't think the airplane was ready for passenger service because they had not validated that they had fixed the problem", he said.

The pilot reported the problems and engineers performed maintenance checks, but cleared the airliner for the doomed Flight 610 from Jakarta to Pangkalpinang.

In their safety recommendations, investigators also highlight (referring to the CASR Part 91.7 Civil Aircraft Airworthiness and the Operation Manual part A subchapter 1.4.2) that "the Pilot in Command is directly and specifically responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the operation of the aircraft".

The pilots managed to pull the nose back up continuously until they finally lost control of the plane.

The pilots may also have struggled with the plane's anti-stall software according to the provisional report.

"What they were focused on was keeping the airplane in the air", said Clint R. Balog, a pilot and aeronautics expert at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Coming from an aviation family, she said that Suneja's sister wanted to follow in his footsteps, but that the fatal accident had shaken her faith in the technology.

Indonesian authorities are expected to issue the report tomorrow, although it is unclear whether they will offer a probable cause for the crash.

Boeing has a great deal at stake in defending its plane.

The Lion Air crash is the world's first involving the 737 MAX jet, a fuel-efficient version of Boeing's workhorse narrow-body introduced into service globally past year.
