Reports Trump Will Pick Heather Nauert to Be UN Ambassador

Trump reportedly picks Heather Nauert to be UN ambassador

US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert is expected to be President Donald Trump's nominee for the United States ambassador to the United Nations, according to media reports.

Nauert did not respond to requests for comment.

During Pompeo's tenure, she has been able to travel on official trips - something Tillerson blocked her from doing - and rose to temporarily hold the position of acting under secretary for public diplomacy and public affairs. The officials were not authorized to speak publicly before Trump's announcement.

Before this, she worked as an ABC News correspondent and as an anchor on the Fox News program, Fox and Friends.

"She's excellent. She's been with us a long time", Trump said of Nauert last month.

Nikki Haley had announced in October that she was leaving the post by the end of the year.

If confirmed, Ms Nauert's appointment could prove controversial given her apparent lack of foreign policy experience.

Ms Nauert, a former Fox News presenter, has been spokeswomen for the US Department of Defence since past year.

The 46-year-old former SC governor - one of the few women in the Trump cabinet - gave no reason for leaving, but dismissed speculation she was planning to run for president in 2020.

It was unclear whether the United Nations ambassador post would remain part of the Cabinet, as it has been under Ms Haley, and there have been internal discussions about not having it remain a Cabinet-level position, one White House official said.

That means Nauert would wield less clout than her predecessor, both at the United Nations and within the administration, and as a result, would pose nowhere near the challenge to national security adviser John Bolton, White House chief of staff John Kelly or Pompeo.
