The New York Yankees missed out on their top target in free agency when Patrick Corbin made a decision to sign with the Washington Nationals.

However, if the Phillies were to sign Happ, he would be a nice fill in as a solid third option in the starting rotation behind ace Aaron Nola and former N.L. Cy Young victor Jake Arrieta.

With the Winter Meetings coming next week and numerous offseason milestones behind us, the free agent logjam was destined to break at any second, and perhaps it just has: Patrick Corbin is reportedly signing with the Washington Nationals.

The signing of Corbin - who had drawn interest from the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies, among other clubs, and was expected to draw offers of at least $20 million a year - could be a signal that the Nationals are moving on from Harper.

Corbin, arguably the best starting pitcher available on the free agent market, had always been linked to the Yankees, who entered this offseason in need of rotation reinforcements. Corbin is the latest of a rather long list of new arrivals in Washington that includes catchers Kurt Suzuki and Yan Gomes and relievers Kyle Barraclough and Trevor Rosenthal. He suffered a broken pinkie last season, which cost him time, and then also missed three months due to a dirt bike accident.

Corbin is coming off of a career year in which he went 11-7 with a 3.15 ERA with 246 strikeouts in 200 innings for the Diamondbacks.

Corbin is drawing plenty of attention from teams in need of starting pitching, and the fact that he's reportedly going to sign very soon makes you believe that he knows exactly where he wants to land.
