'I never directed Michael Cohen to break the law'

Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen gets 3 years in prison

Michael Cohen sentenced to three years in jail

Prosecutors said that Cohen, at Trump's direction, facilitated the payments - in violation of campaign finance laws - to Daniels and McDougal shortly before the 2016 election to buy their silence about alleged liaisons with Trump a decade before he ran for the presidency. The three-year sentence imposed by the judge was a modest reduction from the four to five years recommended under federal guidelines, but still underscored the seriousness of the charges.

Cohen's father, Maurice Cohen, who showed little emotion during the hearing, later told reporters: "My heart is ripped".

Cohen recently pleaded guilty to making false statements in 2017 to the Senate intelligence committee about a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

Trump tweeted Cohen "was a lawyer and he is supposed to know the law".

The judge, in remarks before handing down Cohen's sentence, said the lawyer committed two campaign finance crimes "on the eve" of the 2016 election with the "intent to influence the outcome of that election".

Will Alisson's save prove to be as pivotal as Gerrard's goal? Big chances, a lot of pressure, a lot of great moments. Sure, the shot was right at him but that was because Alisson rushed off his line and read the situation perfectly.

The sentence was the culmination of a spectacular rise and fast fall of a lawyer who attached himself to the fortunes of his biggest client, helped him get elected president, then turned on him, cooperating with two interconnected investigations: one run by federal prosecutors in NY, the other by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is looking into Russian efforts to influence the race for the White House.

An emotional Cohen, 52, Trump's long time "fixer", told the court he accepted responsibility for his personal crimes and "those involving the President of the United States of America". "I felt it was my duty to cover up his dirty deeds".

Since 2017, Mueller has been investigating "any links and/or co-ordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump; and any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".

In an interview with Reuters on Tuesday, Trump denied the payments to the women were campaign contributions.

Cohen referred to a recent tweet from Trump calling him "weak", saying his only weakness had been "blind loyalty" to his former boss.

I'm interested in the moment but I never judge it because the moment is just a little part of all what we do. "I don't think it's going to be long, long term".

"While Mr. Cohen pledges to help in further investigations that is not something the court can consider now", the judge added.

Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen had admitted to covering-up his "dirty deeds".

'Despite that many campaign finance lawyers have strongly stated that I did nothing wrong with respect to campaign finance laws, if they even apply, because this was not campaign finance. "Michael Cohen was sentenced today, President Trump is next".

Cohen's crimes included evading 1.4 million dollars (£1.1m) in taxes and misleading Congress about his talks with Russians about a Trump skyscraper project in Moscow.

Davis said Cohen expects to give testimony to Congress at some point in the future.
