The tweet from iPhone incident occurred when the Huawei's outsourced social media agency, Sapient, experienced virtual private network (VPN) problems with its desktop computer, according to the memo.

The tweet that sparked the controversy wished Huawei followers a "Happy #2019", a message which ended with a note that said it was sent "via Twitter for iPhone". He said the action had been taken because the screw-up had "caused damage to the Huawei brand", which is hard to argue with. According to a January 3 corporate memo obtained by Reuters, one was head of Huawei's digital marketing team and government relations team.

Like many Western services, including Facebook, Twitter is banned in China, forcing people to use VPNs if they want to access the site.

One employee will be demoted and have their pay docked, while the other will be passed over for promotion this year, the Chinese telecommunications company said in an internal document Thursday.
