Pyongyang set to break off denuclearization talks with Washington — diplomat

"I'm not sure why the US came out with this different description", Choe said.

President Trump said during a press conference that Pyongyang requested all sanctions be lifted in exchange for its continued moratorium on missile and nuclear tests, as well as the decommissioning of its Yongbyon test facility.

The North´s warning came amid concerns over its satellite rocket launch site, where some rebuilding activity has been observed in recent weeks, triggering worldwide alarm that Pyongyang might be preparing a long-range missile or space launch.

While Choe praised Kim and Trump's relationship and said their "chemistry is mysteriously wonderful", she went after Pompeo and Bolton by name for creating an atmosphere of hostility and mistrust with their uncompromising demands.

The threat follows the breakdown of a summit meeting in Hanoi between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, and comes amid evidence that North Korea has rebuilt a satellite rocket launchpad.

Pompeo gave no sign of USA willingness to soften its stance in demanding that North Korea give up its nuclear weapons. Earlier, North Korean media said that although the summit produced no tangible result, the leaders agreed to continue their dialogue. The last summit between the U-S and North Korea failed to narrow their differences on dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear program and Washington's willingness to ease sanctions.

"It's the administration's desire that we continue to have conversations around this", Pompeo said.

In Washington this week, the United States special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, said that diplomacy was "still very much alive", though he did not say if there had been any negotiations since the summit, or outline any plans for further talks.

"The president is 100 percent committed to denuclearization of the peninsula, and he's going to make sure that whatever we do furthers that process", she told reporters.

"Kim Jong Un could announce his position on nuclear negotiations with the USA and possibly even how he intends to follow up on his comment in his New Year's speech about "seeking a new path" if the United States continues to exert pressure", said Minyoung Lee, an analyst at NK Pro.

He did, however, offer no specifics on when any new summit might be arranged.

Bolton, who has argued for a tough approach to North Korea, said last week that Trump was open to more talks but also warned of tougher sanctions if the North did not denuclearize. "We have every expectation that he will live up to that commitment".

"What is clear is that the US has thrown away a golden opportunity this time", she said. "That's Chairman Kim's word".

The North Koreans slapped Pompeo with that epithet after talks in July, accusing him of pursuing "a unilateral and gangster-like demand for denucearization" after talks the top U.S. diplomat had called "productive".

In Washington this week, the USA special representative for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, said the United States expected to be able to continue its close engagement, though he offered no specifics on when new talks might be held.

Bolton told reporters outside the White House that he had seen the statement from the North Korean official and that "I think that's inaccurate".

The summit also saw the USA reportedly give the North Korean leader a written and expanded American definition of "complete denuclearization".

Talks in Hanoi collapsed when Mr Trump refused to lift any sanctions until North Korea was completely denuclearised.
