In response, President Donald Trump slammed the idea on Twitter - but back in 2012, he'd described the Electoral College as a "disaster for our democracy".

The current system consists of 538 electors - the total number of members of the US Senate and House of Representatives, plus three electors for the capital Washington - who vote in favor of the candidate who gets the most votes in a state.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), a 2020 presidential candidate, said at a town hall Monday that every vote counts and the only way to ensure that is to have national voting.
