New Zealand mosque attack: Prime Minister Jacinda leads Friday call to prayers today

Five ways that New Zealand showed solidarity with its tiny Muslim community this week.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai, thanked Jacinda Ardern on Friday for her "sincere empathy" following the attack on two New Zealand mosques that killed 50 Muslims.

Muslims prayed at Christchurch's main mosque on Saturday for the first time since a white supremacist massacred worshippers there as New Zealand sought to return to normality after the tragedy. Thank you PM @jacindaardern and New Zealand for your honest empathy and support that has won the respect of 1.5 billion Muslims after the terrorist attack that shook the Muslim community around the world. New Zealand, which already has prosecuted two people for distributing the gruesome livestream video of the attack, has now also made it a crime to share the alleged killer's "manifesto", NZ media reported.

More than 100 people from different religious backgrounds met up at the Islamic Center of Grand Junction, to honor those who died in the attacks in New Zealand.

A two-minute silence was observed across the state on Friday, as thousands formed a human chain around a mosque in Wellington as a symbolic act of protection of the Muslim community during "Jumu'ah" or the Friday Prayer.

Guterres first spoke at Friday prayers in the mosque at the Islamic Cultural Center of NY and then addressed the media at its school.

PM Ardern termed the attack as "one of the darkest days of New Zealand".

"We are alive, we are together, we are determined to not let anyone divide us".

ARDERN: I guess if I was to say New Zealand was a blueprint for anything, in some ways, it's a blueprint what not to do.

Ms Ardern, who swiftly denounced the shooting as terrorism, has announced a ban on military-style semi-automatic and assault rifles.

"Mosques and all places of prayer and contemplation should be safe havens, not sites of terror", Guterres said.
