Second Cyclone Bears Down on West Australia

Australian iron ore supply shouldn't be too disrupted by Cyclone Veronica, unless it floods the mines

'A severe impact is likely': Australia moving 2,000 people from cyclone Trevor's path

Severe Tropical Cyclone Veronica is still 90km west of Port Hedland, but the coast is already receiving a lashing with destructive winds ripping up trees and 174mm of rain registered in the past 24 hours alone. But two large storms such as Trevor and Veronica hitting on the same weekend is rare.

The warning zone extends from Groote Eylandt in the north-west of the Gulf all the way inland to Tennant Creek, and across the border to Burketown on the Queensland side of the border, 500km from Borroloola.

The Northern Territory communities nearest the expected landfall were evacuated Thursday, most of the 2,000 or so residents going by road or defence cargo planes to the provincial capital, Darwin.

Meanwhile in the west, the category 4 system of Cyclone Veronica was nearing Port Hedland late on Saturday night.

"The disruption to seaborne iron ore supply is expected to be approximately 10 million mt (approximately 0.6% of seaborne supply) if the ports are shut for five days", he said.

Western Australia's fire and emergency services chief superintendent, Paul Carr, praised the community for their response to the cyclone but said it was a significant event.

"If you're in Trevor's path you've made all the necessary preparations and now is the time to stay safe and remain in shelter", a Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said in a video update.

Current predictions suggest the cyclone will move more than 400 kilometres inland before it weakens to a tropical storm. It is equivalent of a category three hurricane and expected to make a landfall on Sunday.
